Air Tanzania becomes first African airline to receive Airbus A220

  • December 27, 2018

Air Tanzania Company Limited, the flag carrier airline of Tanzania, has received its first Airbus A220-300 on December 21, 2018, which would be operated on the domestic and regional network. The Tanzanian national airline has become the first African airline and the fifth largest airline in the world to receive an Airbus 220 family, after Swiss, Air Baltic, Korean Air and Delta Airlines.

Air Tanzania, based in Dar es Salaam with its hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport, is expected to receive another aircraft of the same type in January 2019. The Airbus A220-300 has been specifically designed for the 130 to 160 seat market.

Since taking office in 2015, President John Magufuli has given priority to investing in Air Tanzania to get this loss-making company back on its feet and boost the tourism sector, which is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for the country.

Air Tanzania has received four aircrafts since 2016, including a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
