October 29, 2018, will always be remembered as a historic day for Kenya’s aviation sector. It was on this day that the Big Apple met with the Pride of Africa when Kenya Airways’ inaugural flight Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Nairobi safely landed at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The Kenya Airways direct non-stop flight is only 15 hours eastbound and 14 hours westbound. Normal flights from Kenya to the US take up to 22 hours for the 11,849 km between Nairobi and New York involving long layovers in Europe or the Middle East.

President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team of Kenya Airways and the citizens for this achievement. In a statement on his social media handle, he wrote, “It is historic for Kenya’s aviation sector to witness the inaugural direct flight between Nairobi and New York finally take off. The direct air link between our country and the US present great opportunities in trade, tourism and people-to-people relations.”
