Netflix taps into Nollywood; buys Genevieve Nnaji’s ‘Lionheart’ before its premier at TIFF 2018

It’s a Netflix-Nollywood affair as the global streaming giant recently announced that it has purchased worldwide rights to Lionheart, its first original film from Nigeria. The announcement was made just before the premier of the comedy movie at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2018.

The film revolves around Adaeze, played by Genevieve Nnaji (also the Director of the film), who is running a company in a male-dominated industry. Looking to prove her worth, Adaeze steps up to the challenge when her father is forced to take a step back due to health issues.

However, this is not the first time that Netflix has tapped into the Nigerian entertainment business, which is Africa’s largest movie industry. Netflix has previously licensed Nollywood flicks including romantic comedy The Wedding Party as well as crime thriller October 1 but only after both had been screened in local cinemas.
