South African journalist, Allister Sparks, who challanged apartheid, died at 83

Allister Sparks, the South African journalist who challenged Apartheid by bringing to light the brutality of Apartheid system. He died on September 19 at a clinic in Johannesburg at the age of 83.

Allister Sparks was the crusading editor of The Rand Daily, he sought to use the power of the press to expose the injustices of apartheid.

He wrote for many other publications including The Washington Post, The Economist and The London Observer.

But he was best known as editor, from 1977 to 1981, of the Rand Daily, the country’s most prestigious liberal newspaper.
