The UN Security council has observed that Africa has only received 2% of global vaccines till now and urged for more accelerated supply of the same. This was an official presidential statement after it was approved by all 15 council members on Wednesday. The statement also said “equitable access to quality, safe, efficacious, and affordable Covid-19 diagnostics, therapeutics, medicines and vaccines”.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the healthcare systems should be more supported and
vaccines should be available through the COVAX vaccination programme. Also China called its international community in support of Africa to assist them more in the distribution of vaccines all over the continent. Africa has so far reported 3.4 million coronavirus cases and more than 85,000 deaths.
