Africa World Heritage Day 2021: Levers for Building the Africa We Want

Spread the news

May 5 has been established as the African World Heritage Day in 2015. It was declared by the 38th session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Each year on this special date, African cultural and natural, tangible and intangible heritage is widely known across the world — creating awareness of the advantages of promoting and preserving African cultural heritage, also because of the associated challenges faced on the continent.

Among the hurdles — global climate change , armed conflict and therefore the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As such, the African Union (AU) declared 2021 as the “AU Year of the humanities , Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”.

African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) posted on twitter that “Today #5th May, we celebrate the exceptional cultural & natural heritage of the #African continent: “World #Heritage as a lever for the Africa we want”. Note to tune into our various activities 4 the day. AWHF wishes you, A HAPPY #AFRICAN WORLD HERITAGE DAY!!! #AUYear4ArtsCulture”.
