Ethiopia and Kenya inaugurate new border post to boost trade

Spread the news

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed together inaugurated a new border post. It happened on Wednesday. It took place in the Kenyan town of Mayale. It is being done to bolster trade. Abiy said he is on a two-day visit in Kenya. It is his first official trip. He has been visiting since launching military operations against the leaders of the dissident Tigray region. It happened last month.

The market town lies roughly halfway between the Kenyan and Ethiopian capitals. They are like 1,500 kilometres apart from each other. It has no airport and a population of fewer than 40,000 which is very less for trading. They also presided over the ceremonial opening of a 500km stretch of the highway. It connects Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Cross-border violence has traditionally weakened trade and displaced civilians, as Kenyatta acknowledged.
