How African states voted on UN debate on Ukraine

The United Nations took a vote stand condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a two-day emergency special session in its General Assembly. While North Korea, Eritrea, Belarus, Syria, and Russia voted against rebuking the invasion, South Africa was among the 35 countries that abstained from voting. The countries in Africa that did not vote following the UN’s detesting of Russian invasion were Algeria, South Sedan, Mozambique, Mali, Uganda, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Central Africa Republic, Burundi, Senegal, Angola, Congo, Tanzania, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan. 

The only African country that voted against the UN resolution was Eritrea, while Uganda took a stance of voting for neutrality as the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) incoming chair. 

The Un resolution at the General Assemble detests the invasion of Ukraine in the strongest terms and criticizes Vladimir Putin’s actions and decision to place nuclear forces on high alert. Following the motion, Ukraine’s ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya that Russia is depriving Ukraine of every right to exist and its goal is clearly not an occupation but genocide.
