Libya: GNA fighters head for the battle for Sirte looms

Spread the news

On Saturday, Libya’s internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA)  moved its army closer to Sirte which is a gateway to Libya’s main oil terminals. GNA plans to captivate the eastern-based self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA). GNA army forces said a column of 200 vehicles had departed from Misrata towards the town of Tawergha.

GNA has already captured most of the territory in northwest Libya which in turn ended the military commander Khalifa Haftar’s 14-month campaign to take the capital, Tripoli.  GNA hoping to recapture Sirte and an LNA airbase at Jufra.United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia, has threatened to send troops into Libya if the GNA and Turkish forces try to seize Sirte.
