Mauritius: Emergency over oil spills from grounded ship

Spread the news

The residents of the Indian Ocean nation of Mauritius have made a line of stuffed fabric sacks with sugarcane leaves to create a bunker in the ocean. It will shift the oil in one direction and will not spill all in the ocean. Tonnes of spilt oil have already put a lot of marine life in danger. Keeping all this in mind the government has declared an emergency on Saturday, as satellite images showed a dark slick spreading in the turquoise waters near wetlands that the government called “very sensitive”.

Government is also scared that very soon the ship will be torn apart from its cracked area and will cause more damage to the ocean. The residents and the environmentalists are wondering why the government did not act fast after the ship sank on 25th July.
