President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reopening of 4 land borders. He has approved them in three of the six geopolitical zones of the country. This should be with immediate effect. These include the Illela and Maigatari borders within the North- West, Seme border within the South- West and Mfun border within the South-South. However, the ban on importation of rice, poultry, among others remained intact.
With the new amendment, import and export of approved goods would begin in earnest after months of closure. According to the sources, the news of the reopening of the borders had elicited thunderous applause. This is done within the affected communities with residents saying life will come to normal. Many Nigerians had decried the closure of the borders, saying the event had aggravated poverty, made the value of basic needs high and crippled the source of livelihood of the many.
