Once told to sew a skirt, now she is one of the top officers!

Spread the news

Officer Iman Elman was born into a house of activists who pursue peace and human rights. She was brought up in  the Somali capital of Mogadishu but grew up in Canada. She was 19 years old in the entrance traces within the nation’s combat in opposition to the terror group of Al Shabab. She shared the incident that happened with her when she was enlisted in the Somali National Army in 2011.

She was given a shirt and 2 pairs of pants. She asked for the shirt but the officer told her that there are no other shirts and the extra pants are given to sew a skirt out of them. She thought that she was not going to wear a skirt and calmly returned the second pair of pants. This incident was just a reminder to her that she has to fight all the norms of society as well as the patriarchal ones.
