Resignation: Thomas Thabane Lesotho’s Prime Minister

Spread the news

Thomas Thabane’s coalition government collapsed on May 11 and he had been expected to resign by May 22. He was facing mounting pressure to step down over a case in which he and his current wife are suspected of involvement in the 2017 murder of his previous, estranged wife. They both deny this.

Finance Minister Moeketsi Majoro, 58, is expected to replace him. He will have to pass the budget and revive the economy. Lesotho has taken a big economic hit due to the global slowdown brought about by the pandemic. The country has only confirmed one coronavirus case so far this year, with the death of one person. The government has been rocked by divisions within its ranks.
