In western Uganda, the police have arrested the King of Rwenzururu over clashes between police and militia which killed at least 55 people. The King named Charles Wesley Mumbere has been accused of provoking violence after militiamen attacked a police post in his hometown of Kasese. It has been reported that security forces stormed his palace amid the King’s denial that he was at all involved.
In violent clashes that proceeded, at least 14 police officers and 41 militants have died in the clashes. Police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi said the attackers were fighting to create a new republic on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many other people were also arrested when security forces marched into the King’s palace on Sunday. After a heavy fire fight, the King was arrested. He is now in the custody of the police in the capital city of Kampala.
