A $700 million dollar credit has been approved by the World Bank to Nigeria for the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH). They made the official announcement on their website on Thursday in Washington D.C. In the statement, it said the credit amount will provide six million people with basic drinking water services and 1.4 million people access to improved sanitation services.
Also, it will provide improved Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services to 2,000 schools and Health Care Facilities. It will also assist 500 communities to achieve open defecation-free status. All this will be included under the Federal Government’s National Action Plan (NAP) for the revitalisation of Nigeria’s water supply, sanitation, and hygiene sector. According to sources, the programme also aims to support NAP, a 13 year strategy and action in three phases- Emergency, recovery and revitalisation to make Nigeria free of open defecation by 2025.
