Ethiopia: UN welcomes political reform as Prime Minister steps down

In a dramatic political overhaul, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, resigned from his post last week mitigating, to some extent, the mass anti-government protests going on in the country for the past several years.

However, this snap decision has drowned the country further in political uncertainty.

The United Nations on Friday took note of this recent decision by the Prime Minister to ‘allow further political reforms to take place in the country aimed at widening democratic space,’ and welcomed the Government’s expressed intention to follow through with governance reforms.

According to Al Jazeera, Hailemariam, who came to power after the death of his predecessor, Meles Zenawi in 2012, said he will stay on as a caretaker prime minister until a replacement is named.
