The ‘end of a war’ as Ethiopia-Eritrea adopt joint declaration of peace

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 11, 2018/- Ending a 20-year conflict, Ethiopia and Eritrea have declared that their ‘state of war’ has come to an end. A joint committee which implements the Ethiopian-Eritrea Peace and Friendship Agreement has started work, according to the Ethiopia Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit to Eritrea, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed disclosed recently that the leaders of the two countries have agreed to work jointly in diplomacy, transport, boundary affairs, use of port, and trade as well as African and international issues.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Workneh Gebeyehu held a press conference on Monday on the visit of the Premier to Eritrea.

At the conference, the Minister stated that a joint committee that implements the agreement reached by the leaders in Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, is formed.

The main committee will be chaired by foreign ministers of the two countries that comprise sub-committees under them.

The main committee, which started work officially on July 7, is expected to deeply review the issues raised in the agreement and propose different ideas, he added.

According to him, Ethiopian Airlines will start flying to Asmara next week. Workneh stated that the countries have already begun identifying sites for their embassies

Meanwhile, the United Nations has commended Prime Minister Abiy of Ethiopia and President Isaias of Eritrea for courageously leading their citizens towards peace, prosperity, and political reform. The normalization of relations and the adoption of the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia will provide their people with the opportunity to focus on shared aspirations for closer political, economic, and social ties.
