Organise elections in December to overcome political crisis, ECOWAS suggests Togo

The Summit of Heads of State of ECOWAS member countries made a number of recommendations recently to help find a way out of the political crisis Togo has been going through for nearly a year.

The most important point is the organization of the parliamentary elections on December 20th. The poll should have taken place in July.

In the meantime, the Economic Community of West African States invited the government to proceed to the “complete revision of the electoral register”.

The organization also invited political actors to work on constitutional reforms. These include the two-term limitation of the presidential term and the introduction of the first-past-the-post two-round system for the presidential election.

ECOWAS would like these reforms to be adopted by parliamentary means or, failing that, by referendum. Finally, the organization wants the Diaspora to participate in future elections.

The opposition has not yet responded to the organization’s recommendations.
