One killed in Sudan as thousands rally for faster reform

A government spokesperson said that, while thousands of people took the streets demanding quicker changes and more civil rule in the transition to democracy in Sudan, one was killed and several others were wounded during mostly peaceful demonstrations.

Amid coronavirus reclaiming to call for a transition to democracy following last year’s overthrow of the old governor, Omar Al-Bashir, tens of thousands of protesters took to the street in Sudanese cities Tuesday.

After the government had closed the roads and bridges leading to the centre of the capital city, protesters gathered in Khartoum and its twin cities, Khartoum North and Omdurman.

Tear gas has been used by police to disperse protestors on a road to Khartoum airport. Causalities have not been reported immediately.

In eastern Sudan and Darfur, similar protests also took place in Kassala. The slogan of the anti-al-Bashir movement was “democracy, peace and justice.”
