At Least 50 dead after a goldmine collapsed in eastern Congo

Landslides caused the collapse of three artisanal gold mines near the city of Kamituga in eastern Congo’s South Kivu province as informed by the officials. This incident happened on Friday. It caused the death of more than 50 people. Landslides occurred due to heavy rains for days leading to the disaster. A team of rescuers came to discover the bodies of the victims with the help of motor pumps.

Diwa Honore, who survived the tragedy, said more than 50 people had been in the three mines, which are about 50 metres (54 yards) deep. The diggers and the transporters of the stones were swallowed up by the waters. Most of the dead were young people. Governor of South Kivu, Theo Ngwabidje Kasi, who offered condolences to families.
