Mali’s ex-President Amadou Toumani Toure dies aged 72

Mali’s former President Amadou Toumani Toure died at the age of 72. He led the Sahel nation for over 10 years. Then he was removed in a coup. According to his doctors and family members, he was in Turkey when he died. His nephew told on Tuesday that he died during the night of Monday to Tuesday in Turkey, where he had been taken for health reasons.

According to the doctor in Bamako, he had undergone surgery. Everything was going well but due to some medical issues, he had to shift to Turkey. Toure who was a former army general popularly known by his initials ATT, first took charge of the country for a year in 1991 after military ruler Moussa Traore’s security forces killed more than 100 pro-democracy demonstrators.
