South Africa crosses one million cases of COVID-19

There were a total of 26,735 deaths.

The outbreak in Africa’s worst-hit country seems to escalate with the one million marks crossed nine days after 900,000 cases were registered. It took South Africa two weeks to get to 900,000 cases, up from 800,000 at the beginning of December.

Several hospitals and medical centres, with much medical staff cancelling their vacation to cope with the large influx of patients, have confirmed overflowing stations.

Mediclinic International said on Sunday that a severe increase in the number of cases put tremendous stress on its health services, including workers, equipment and beds, for critically ill patients, among the top three private hospital networks in South Africa.
