Ivory Coast PM Bakayoko dies in Germany from cancer

Hamed Bakayoko, the Prime Minister of the Ivory Coast, died of cancer in a German hospital. In the West African region, he had a long media and political career.

Hamed Bakayoko, the Prime Minister of the Ivory Coast, died of cancer in Germany on Wednesday at the age of 56, according to the government. Bakayoko was being treated in a Freiburg hospital as a potential successor to current Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara.

Bakayoko was recently moved to Germany after a medical trip to Paris a month ago. Last week, Ouattara met with Bakayoko in France, and the president praised him as a “great statesman.”

“The prime minister served Ivory Coast with dedication and selflessness,” Ouattara said in a statement expressing his condolences. African Development Bank Group President Akinwumi A. Adesina said he was “very saddened” by Bakayoko’s death in a tweet. “May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
