Libya kickstarts coronavirus vaccine drive

Libya began its coronavirus vaccine drive within the capital Tripoli on Saturday. At some health centres, there are queues of people expecting their shots. Libya is employing a mixture of vaccines, like Russia’s Sputnik jab, the Oxford-AstraZeneca and therefore the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.

People over the age of 70 would get the AstraZeneca jab while the Russian Sputnik V vaccine would be administered to medical personnel and other people aged 50-60, the National Centre for Disease Control said. a number of those vaccines have come through the worldwide Covax programme. The vaccines are stored in medical supply stores to distribute them across the country.

Also the government has requested people to register for the jab. The country is struggling to emerge from decades of violence and political rivalries following its descent into chaos within the aftermath of the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted dictator Moamer Kadhafi. Libya has reported quite 170,000 cases and almost 3,000 deaths. Libya officially launched its vaccination campaign hebdomadally ago with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah getting the first jab.
