On 19th February 2021-In line with FIFA’s efforts to promote football in Africa, Kigali was selected as the residence of the FIFA Regional Development Office. The regional office opens after the conclusion of a partnership agreement between FIFA and Rwanda.
The inaugural ceremony included Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA; Dr. Vincent Biruta, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda; Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju, the Minister of Sports of Rwanda; and various heads of football associations from the region.
In launching the office, Infantino congratulated President Paul Kagame for hosting FIFA’s office to kick-start its activities in the region.
Biruta commended FIFA on choosing Rwanda as the host country for the regional office and pledged to provide full support so that the office can fulfil its mandate. The office is mandated to coordinate and provide strategic guidance to the activities of regional member associations, and provide support for the development of football in the region.
