Tunisia: Demonstrator dies after inhaling tear gas at landfill protest

A demonstrator in Tunisia died overnight after inhaling tear gas. According to sources, the police dispersed protesters over the reopening of a landfill site. He was 35-year-old and died in the town of Aguereb in the central region of Sfax. The area was suffering from long weeks of demonstrations over a growing waste crisis.

According to hospital officials, Abderrazek was transferred to Aguereb hospital suffering from asphyxia. His kinsman said that he (Abderrazek) was alive when he arrived at the hospital but died after security forces fired tear gas outside and claimed the death was caused by the police.

Tunisian human rights group FTDES says Aguereb had seen “a violent intervention by security forces on Monday night to force the reopening of the Qena rubbish dump”.

According to the interior ministry’s spokesperson Yasser Mesbah , ” Protesters flared again on Tuesday and demonstrators set fire to a National Guard station in the town. “
