South Africa’s last white president Frederik Willem de Klerk dies at 85

South Africa’s last white president, Frederik Willem (FW) de Klerk, died Thursday, leaving his last video apology  for crimes against other ethnic groups during decades of apartheid.

He has received worldwide recognition for his overthrow of apartheid and shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela. The following year, Mandela won South Africa’s first multiracial election through the African National Congress (ANC).

However, De Klerk’s role in the transition from white minority domination remains controversial.

Many blacks were outraged at his failure to contain political violence in the turbulent times leading up to the 1994 elections, and right-wing white Africans who  ruled the country for a long time under De Klerk’s Nationalist Party saw him as a traitor against their interests. . White supremacy and nationalism.
