Joel Matip: The first Cameroonian to win Premier League’s monthly award

Joel Matip, the 31-year Cameroonian centre-back football player became the first player of Cameroon origin to win the player of the month award in the Premier League. His award came after the historic 6-0 score win over Leeds as well as assisting Diogo Jota while the Reds beat Leicester.

Joel Matip played every moment of the game, as Liverpool won all four matches in the month of February. He won the award in front of Ryan Fraser, Che Adams, Ben Mee, Wilfried Zaha and Harry Kane. 

Joel Matip had played for the indomitable lions of Cameroon in the 2010 and 2014 world cup, when he won 27 caps for the country, however, he had not played for the Cameroons since 2015, after getting all upset about how the country football association runs the sport domestically and internationally. 

Joel Matip, a Cameroon origin football player was born in Germany but represented Cameroon at international level competitions. He plays for the Cameroon national team and the Liverpool Premier League club. He became the third Liverpool player and the first Cameroon origin player to win the player of the month award.
