Morocco Heads A1 Group Ahead of AFCON 2025 Draw Ceremony

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed details for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw ceremony, scheduled for 7 p.m. local time on Monday at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco.

As the host nation, Morocco has been confirmed as the top seed in Group A (A1), while defending champions Côte d’Ivoire will lead another group. The remaining teams have been divided into four pots based on FIFA’s rankings as of December 19, 2024.

  • Pot 1: Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria.
  • Pot 2: Cameroon, Mali, Tunisia, South Africa, DR Congo, Burkina Faso.
  • Pot 3: Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, Benin.
  • Pot 4: Mozambique, Comoros, Tanzania, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Botswana.

CAF outlined the draw process, confirming that Morocco’s position (A1) will be assigned first. Teams from Pot 4 will then be sequentially allocated to positions A4 through F4, followed by teams in Pots 3 and 2 for positions A3–F3 and A2–F2. Finally, the remaining Pot 1 teams will occupy positions B1 through F1.

CAF also clarified the tournament format, where the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the Round of 16.

The draw ceremony is a key milestone in the buildup to the highly anticipated tournament, which Morocco will host for the first time since 1988.
