A major step towards Africa’s sustainable future has been taken with the launch of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Africa at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. The centre will focus on education, research, and policy solutions to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the continent.
A Hub for Innovation and Research
The centre aims to train highly skilled professionals through specialized educational programs while conducting research to tackle Africa’s biggest development challenges. The UN highlighted Addis Ababa’s strategic importance as the capital of the African Union, making it an ideal location for spearheading sustainable initiatives.
Ethiopia’s Role in Global Sustainability Efforts
Addis Ababa University, known for its contributions to international projects, will play a key role in managing the centre. Samuel Kifle, Acting President of the University, expressed confidence in the institution’s ability to lead impactful research and policy development.
The Sustainable Development Solutions Network, launched in 2012, is a global initiative that promotes practical solutions for achieving the SDGs. This new African centre will serve as a key platform to address climate change, economic growth, and social development.
Looking Ahead: Africa’s Climate Leadership
Ethiopia continues to establish itself as a leader in Africa’s climate agenda. Following the recent African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian officials proposed hosting the second African Climate Summit in 2025, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainability.
With this new centre, Ethiopia and the UN are strengthening Africa’s ability to develop homegrown solutions for sustainable growth, ensuring that progress is both innovative and inclusive.
