Tanzania has been selected to host the Second UN Tourism Gastronomy Forum for Africa, scheduled to take place from April 23 to 25, 2025, in Arusha. The forum will bring together global tourism and culinary experts to highlight the growing role of gastronomy in economic development and sustainable tourism.
The announcement was made by Pindi Chana, Tanzania’s Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, following an assessment visit by the UN Tourism Secretariat in Dar es Salaam. The decision to hold the event in Tanzania reflects the country’s commitment to promoting its rich culinary heritage as part of its broader tourism strategy.
Building on Previous Success
Tanzania was chosen as the next host following the success of the inaugural edition in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in July 2024. The event is a collaboration between Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the UN Tourism Organisation, and the Basque Culinary Centre. The forum will focus on economic development, cultural preservation, and community empowerment through food tourism.
Tanzania’s Growth in Tourism Recognized
Elcia Grandcourt, UN Tourism’s Regional Director for Africa, praised Tanzania’s strong leadership in regional tourism, noting its post-pandemic recovery, which saw a 50% increase in visitor arrivals and improved air connectivity. She also recognized Tanzania’s experience in hosting major tourism events, including the UN Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF) meeting in 2022.
A Platform for Culinary Tourism Development
The three-day event will feature expert discussions, panel sessions, and masterclasses focusing on how gastronomy can drive tourism growth. Topics will include the economic potential of food tourism, its role in preserving cultural identity, and strategies to showcase Africa’s diverse cuisines.
As Tanzania prepares to host tourism stakeholders from across Africa and beyond, the forum aims to position African gastronomy as a global attraction. With its vibrant food scene and dedication to sustainable tourism, Tanzania is set to highlight the richness of African culinary heritage while exploring new opportunities for economic growth.
