Key Developments in Mauritania’s Energy and Agriculture Sectors

World Bank Rescinds and Approves DREAM Project 

On April 17, 2023, the World Bank Group approved the “Mauritania Development of Energy Resources and Mineral Sector Support Project” – known as the DREAM project- with the key objectives being: 

– Promoting Green Hydrogen: Development of green hydrogen in Mauritania.

 – Building Energy Storage: Expanding energy storage to enhance reliability.

 – Restructuring the Mining Sector: Supporting key government structural reform in the mining sector to enable investment and sustainability.

 It is also because of projects like this that the DREAM project will be an essential piece of the energy and minerals sector development pathways for Mauritania. 

Mauritanian Energy Minister will Attend African Energy Week 2025 from September 29 to October 3, 

Mauritania’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled, will attend the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, to: 

  • Support Gitty Bee Energy Projects: Showcasing Mauritania’s growing portfolio of energy projects
  • Attract Investment Opportunities: Highlighting all of the opportunities available to global investors in the country’s energy resources. 

These developments showcase Mauritania’s dedication to attracting investment and developing energy. 

FAO Workshop on Agricultural Mechanization—The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) co-hosted a workshop on “Mechanisation of Agriculture” with Mauritania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty on December 1, 2022. The meeting focused on common challenges and opportunities for collaboration in mechanisation of agriculture throughout Africa, sharing best practices and case studies. 

FAO is also working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty in another area of agriculture for food and nutrition security within Mauritania.  

Priority areas from the workshop will be documented by the FAO, and shared in the next few months with stakeholders involved in mechanisation of agriculture throughout Africa.
