Women in Ethiopia are making an unprecedented move into male influenced areas in business like welding, construction, and carpentry. Through the World Bank’s provision of aid, the women businesses are able to expand and employ more workers. Hannah Bernanu is one of such women, working with over 13 industrial machines in her own enterprise, Abyssinia Woodwork PLC, which she acquired through a loan facility to small and medium-size enterprises (SME) by the World Bank. Hannah is empowering other young women, employing about 34 women out of the 45 workers she has.
It was important for me to create opportunities for women in this field,” Hanna explains. “There is no reason why they shouldn’t be part of the industry.”
