Tanzania’s Granary Vision: Powering East Africa’s Food Security

Tanzania is rapidly solidifying its position as a major player in East Africa’s food security landscape. With the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) setting an ambitious TZS 1.2 trillion (approximately $490 million USD) budget for 2025/26, the nation is making strategic investments that extend far beyond its borders. This isn’t just about feeding Tanzanians; it’s about building a regional food hub.

A large part of the budget is allocated to increasing storage capacity, especially in the Southern Highlands, which produces almost half of Tanzania’s maize. This strategic move, along with improved procurement goals for essential staples such as maize and paddy, ensures a more reliable supply. With a food self-sufficiency rate of 128%, as noted by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania is positioned as a stable resource for its neighboring countries.

The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has reached record stock levels of over 700,000 tonnes by late 2024, highlighting its potential. These reserves serve as an essential safeguard against regional food crises, which frequently occur due to climate fluctuations and other disruptions. The NFRA is not merely holding this surplus; it is actively involved in regional sales, forming partnerships with the World Food Programme (WFP) and exporting to nations such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

Tanzania is addressing the increasing food trade deficit in Eastern Africa by enhancing its internal food systems and increasing its reserves. The country aims to be not only a stable breadbasket but also a dependable partner in promoting collective food security across the continent.

Keep your eyes on Dar es Salaam, as its strategic agricultural investments promise a more resilient future for the entire region.
