The World Health Organization says the pandemic in Africa “accelerated,” and it took only 18 days to reach 200,000 while the continent took 98 days to reach 100,000 cases of coronavirus.

WHO CEO Matshidiso Moeti from Africa said that the transmission of the communities in more than half of the 54 countries of Africa has begun and “that’s a serious sign.”

The virus is primarily reached on the continent through Europeans and spreads into more rural areas, beyond capitals and business hubs, where most healthcare systems are not adequately prepared to handle cases requiring intensive care.

Moeti noted that the virus is propagated from Cape Town to the more rural Eastern Cape in South Africa. With more than 55,000 cases, South Africa has the largest number in the world.
