Concerns have been raised for wildlife activists in Zimbabwe after two Chinese companies are exploring for coal in the protected Hwange National Park. Some Chinese people were drilling in the national park and were arrested by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers. The park rangers handed them over to the police only to be released and returned to the site with a permit allowing them to dig.
Bhejane Trust, one of the leading wildlife conservations stated that SustiGlobal and Zimbabwe Zhongxin Coal Mining Group are mining in Sinamatella and Robbins Camp between Hwange and Victoria Falls and also confirmed that SustiGlobal had circulated discussions seeking the views of concerned stakeholders about establishing a mine in the game park.
