Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the ousted president of Mali, died at the age of 76 after suffering a minor stroke on Sunday. This death was informed to the officials by a family member and the time of death was mentioned to be 9.00GMT.
Born in southern Koutiala, to a civil servant father, Ibrahim presided over his political position for 7 years in Mali, before he was forced out from the country in a coup conducted by the military in 2020. The expulsion was fuelled by the national economic crisis and controversial elections throughout his tenure as the president, which caused demonstrations against him.
Ibrahim Boubacar Keita lived in France during his teaching period at the University of Paris, where he completed his education in literature, history, and international relations. He returned to Mali in 1980 and joined the position of an advisor at the European Fund.
He won as the president in 2013 by a landslide, on grounds of his promise of bringing peace and security to the country. However, during his tenure, he and his government failed to battle the challenges gripping Mali and he was finally expelled from the country in 2020 by the military.
