Ethnic clashes in South Sudan

The rise in ethnic hate speech and incitement of violence against some ethnic groups could result in mass atrocities; the leaders in South Sudan have been warned beforehand to control.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein warned on Tuesday after threats of violence were issued against people from the Equatoria region when an Equatorian staff member of a humanitarian organisation was attacked in Aweil Town.

Rumours violently circulated on the social media about the number of civilians killed and also calling for revenge attacks against Equatorians.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein called for investigation in the October 8 and 10 violence as a followup.
