The Climate Smart Agriculture Investment Plan (CSAIP) is a groundbreaking initiative that will respond to the impacts of climate change on agriculture. The key elements of CSAIP are:
Resilience: Improving the capacity of the sector to respond to challenges such as droughts, floods and soil degradation.
Sustainable practices: Advocating and building capacities for adapted and environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
New agricultural practices: Providing the new benchmarks for climate-resilient agriculture.
With the implementation of CSAIP, Senegal aims to develop a sustainable and resilient agricultural system that supports the environment and the local community.
The Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture in Senegal
Agriculture is a key component in Senegal’s economy, yet it is highly susceptible to the effects of climate change. The sector experiences significant vulnerabilities, such as:
Droughts: Affecting crop production and overall food security.
Flooding: Damaging crops and threats to infrastructure and production capacity.
Land degradation: Reducing the fertility and productivity.
These climate change challenges endanger agricultural production and the national food sovereignty.
National Adaptation Plan
As a response to these challenges, Senegal has developed a National Adaptation Plan (NAP), initiated in 2015, with a focus on:
- The Cancun Conference (COP16, UNFCCC) principles
- The requirements of the Paris Agreement
- The NAP specifically addresses the necessary measures to address the needs and vulnerabilities of the sectors outlined in the NAP, allowing for a coordinated, mixed approach to climate adaptation.
Launch of the National Adaptation Plan for Climate-Resilient Agriculture
On April 3, 2025, Senegal launched a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) for the agricultural sector, with the goal of strengthening the country’s ability to adapt to climate change, when it was established. Main events included:
Launch event: The NAP was doughnuted in a workshop, which was co-chaired by Dr. Mabouba Diagne and Profesor Daouda Ngom.
Aim: To strengthen Senegal’s ability to adapt to climate change (e.g., increased drought and unpredictable rainfall) impacts on agricultural systems to ensure food security and sustainable development.
Strategic Action Plan for Climate-Resilient Agriculture
The agricultural NAP provides a clear strategic direction for Senegal to implement sustainable climate responses, providing the basis for a coordinated approach to climate challenges for the medium and long term.
