Tunisia: Premier Chahed says campaign by Algerian media will have no bearing on tourist season, bilateral relations

The campaign launched by Algerian media in the recent weeks over the conduct of some Tunisian tourism professionals with Algerian visitors will have no bearing on the tourist season in Tunisia and bilateral relations, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed recently told reporters on the side-lines of a visit to the border crossing of Maloula, governorate of Jendouba.

Tunisia attracted 2.4 million Algerian tourists in the period spanning January to mid-August, including 490,000 who passed through the border crossing of Maloula, the Premier said.

Chahed spoke with some Algerian tourists and enquired about their stay conditions in Tunisia.

An Algerian media campaign in the second half of July and the first fortnight of August had accused Tunisian tourism professionals of expelling Algerian tourists.

In another connection, Chahed pledged to commit 19 MTD to the rehabilitation of the border crossing of Maloula, in a bid to meet international standards, and given its importance in transit between the two countries as well as between Tunisia and some African countries.
