Ghanaian Independence Day:

This legal public holiday is held on 6 March. When the 6th of March falls on a weekend, a holiday is held the following Monday. Ghana’s national day is celebrated and commemorated in 1957 the independence of Ghana from the UK.

Breif History

Ghana was the site of Ashanti, a mighty tribe in the region before the arrival of Europeans. The area was richly lined with natural resources and attracted the attention of the colonists, including gold and ivory. While the Portuguese were the first to settle in the region, the appeal of the local wealth led to a struggle for control between many European nations. England seized control of the country and named it British Gold Coast in 1874.
