Madagascar received its first 250,000 doses of Astra Zeneca vaccine, Covishield, to combat the second wave of overwhelming health facilities. Madagascar eventually agreed to accept vaccinations under the Covax facility scheme, which provides low-income countries with free access to the vaccine after a four-month refusal. The island nation in the Indian Ocean is grappling with an outbreak of infections, with nearly 9,900 cases recorded in the last month, with at least 194 deaths.
The first jabs will be administered to health and police workers.The country has so far reported 34,775 coronavirus cases, including 588 deaths. Schools and hotels are converted into hospitals because of shortage of beds.
