270 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been purchased by the African Union for the whole continent. They made this announcement on Wednesday. They had bought it from Pfizer and AstraZeneca. They have received it through the Serum Institute of India, and Johnson & Johnson.
As they have claimed at least 50 million doses will be available. It will be available from April to June and will be enough for three months. But the rest will be delivered before the end of 2021. This was announced by the African Union chairman, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The agreements were negotiated by the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team. This team was established by the African Union. According to reports, the continent has crossed 3 million confirmed cases. There are more than 1.2 million in South Africa. There, a new variant of the coronavirus now makes up most of its new cases.
