The current President of Cameroon, Paul Biya, has declared that he will contest the next presidential election, scheduled to be held on October 7 this year.

The 85-year-old politician has been the President of Cameroon since November 6, 1982.

Seeking a seventh term, Biya made the formal announcement in a tweet on Friday. The statement read: ‘Dear Compatriots from Cameroon and the Diaspora Aware of the challenges we face together for an even more united, stable and prosperous Cameroon, I agree to respond favourably to your urgent appeals. I will be your candidate in the next presidential election.’

Notably, the president’s main rival is 49-year-old Joshua Osih of the opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF).
