Appreciating former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh’s move to leave for exile, the United Nations has hailed his “goodwill and statesmanship” to make headway for of the smooth transition of powers to democratically elected President Adama Barrow.

Along with the UN, the Economic Committee of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union have also commended Jammeh’s decision.

Congratulating the Afican leaders for their success, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a tweet, “The rule of law has prevailed in The Gambia. I congratulate African leadership for this success in restoring democracy.”
