The Arts and Culture Minister of South Africa, Nathi Mthethwa, has suggested a change of name of the country.

Speaking at a cadre’s forum over the weekend, the minister said South Africa isn’t a name, but rather “a geographical description of where we are,” well spotted. He added that while the ruling party has made some progress in dealing with the remnants of colonialism, places like Durban — and clearly the country itself — could still be renamed.

“To tell the truth, the country does not have a name. It is not there. Benjamin D’Urban named our place, eThekwini, after himself and called it Durban,” Mthethwa said, adding that there are places in KZN with names that are not Zulu, and this must change.
