A new law has been introduced in the Kaduna State of Nigeria that child rapists will be punished with castration and death has come into force. Men who will be found guilty for raping a child of fewer than 14 years will have their testicles removed surgically before execution. This law was signed by the governor of the state, Nasir el-Rufai on Wednesday. Also, women will have their fallopian tubes removed.

Nasir said that this law was important to help further protect children from serious crime. Many Nigerians who were shouting for justice accepted this new law enthusiastically but critics say it is a populist move incompatible with the country’s Constitution. They predict it will lead to fewer rapes being reported. Also why rapists would be castrated if they are then going to be executed was not immediately clear.
