Uganda’s electoral commission proclaimed Yoweri Museveni the winner of the country’s presidential election, extended his 35-year rule as Bobi Wine’s strongest rival, claimed fraud, and urged people to reject the outcome.
Museveni won 5.85 million or 58.64 per cent of the total votes cast, while the main opposition candidate Bobi Wine won 3.48 million which is 34.83 per cent of the votes cast.
This was declared by the commission in a televised news conference. Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, Chairman Justice said that “The electoral commission declares Yoweri Museveni as the elected president of the Republic of Uganda.”
According to sources, Security forces were roaming around the streets of Kampala after the announcement. There was one soldier atop an armoured personnel carrier urging citizens to maintain social distancing as a helicopter buzzed overhead.
