Niger is up for the second round of votes. This time no candidate clinched the needed majority. This time for a primary round win within the December 27 vote. Former Prime Minister Mohammed Bazoum was the first with the maximum votes. He was the head of the ruling party with 39.33 percent of the votes. Former president Mahamane Ousmane was second with 16.99 per cent of votes. The results were announced on Saturday.
Mahamadou Issoufou, the right-hand man of the outgoing president, will now need to seek alliances. it should be done before the second round of polls on February 20. Voter turnout was pegged at 69.67%, with 5.2 million voters out of seven .4 million registered voters for a population of 23 million. These must be validated by the Constitutional Court.
