Nma Okoroji, The President of the National Coconut Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria revealed that coconuts can help generate over $400 billion for the Nigerian economy annually. She said this when she was delivering a speech at the 2020 World Coconut Day celebration held in Abuja on Wednesday. She said that coconut is a really important crop or cash crop which generates 400 billion USD annually. She also added that between 265 tons of coconut are produced in Nigeria presently and 70 per cent of it is produced by Lagos State and 30 per cent is produced by the other states in Nigeria.
The world coconut day was introduced in 2009. It’s celebrated on September 2 of every year to commemorate the formation day of Asia and Pacific Coconut Community which functions under the aegis of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP).
